Stephen Penders was born in Glasgow in 1967 and studied fine art at Glasgow School of Art. After a brief period exhibiting in Glasgow he entered into a career in art education. In 1995 he moved to Ireland. In 2007 he returned to work as a practicing artist. Since then he has been a regular exhibitor at the Royal Ulster Academy and staged his first solo show in 2009. His work from 2007 to 2009 focused on studying the everyday lives of the local population. Stephen's Glasgow upbringing influenced the depiction of a small rural Ireland town and the people who live there. His concerns have developed into a more in depth investigation into identity and the influences which affect who we are and how we perceive ourselves.
