Francis O'Toole

Francis O’Toole is an Irish visual artist based in Dublin. He studied classical art in Florence, where he developed refined skills in both drawing and painting, grounding his practice in traditional techniques. At the age of seventeen, O’Toole survived a near‑fatal industrial accident, an experience that led him to art and ultimately shaped his creative path. After initial encouragement from his family to take up painting, he travelled to Italy to study in Florence, deepening his understanding of composition, form and expression through rigorous academic training.

O’Toole’s work is rooted in figurative painting with a strong emphasis on texture, atmosphere and symbolic depth. Drawing on influences from classical masters as well as modern Surrealists, his compositions often invite introspection and emotional resonance. Over the course of his career he has exhibited internationally, with his work shown in Dublin, London, New York, Norway and Italy, and collected by both private and public collectors. He has also received a number of prestigious awards, including the Ireland‑U.S. Council Portraiture Award at the Royal Hibernian Academy’s Annual Exhibition for With Tomorrow, a striking work that explores vulnerability and empathy through meticulous execution.
