Paul James
Paul James is an English contemporary realist painter based in southern Ireland, widely recognised for his remarkable technical ability and expressive realism. Essentially self‑taught, he began painting professionally in 1986 and has since become known for his atmospheric landscapes and exquisite wildlife and animal portraits. James’ work is defined by dramatic lighting, seductive colour and meticulous attention to detail, particularly in his depictions of fur, feathers and natural forms, lending each subject a sense of personality and life.
Over the years his work has evolved to include imaginative juxtapositions of wildlife in urban settings, inspired in part by early experiences painting from life, including extensive travel and living on a narrowboat through Britain’s inland waterways. Alongside his painting career, James is an accomplished musician and composer, reflecting a broad creative life. His work has been exhibited across Ireland and beyond, attracting a wide following for its blend of technical excellence, emotional presence and narrative richness.
